Orifice Selection: Ruby and Sapphire Versus Diamond for waterjet cutting machine

The orifice assembly plays a vital role in waterjet cutting by guiding high-pressure water through the mixing tube, where it incorporates abrasive material and directs the mixture to the cut. While waterjet diamond orifice are considered the industry standard, ruby and sapphire options are also available.

Ruby and sapphire orifices serve as functional substitutes and are primarily used in less demanding situations. They are vulnerable to damage under high-pressure conditions due to abrasive impacts that can harm the inlet edge, degrading waterjet precision. Typically, these orifices are priced between $5 and $30 and have a lifespan ranging from just 1 to 40 hours.

In contrast, waterjet diamond orifice produce a more uniform and stable jet stream, which extends the lifespan of the mixing tube and enhances cutting performance. These higher-end options cost roughly $330 to $360 each, come with a warranty of around 500 hours, and often surpass this duration, with many operators achieving over 1,000 hours of use per piece.

Waterjet diamond orifice are suited for high-pressure setups (60K–100K PSI) and are favored for prolonged cuts on expensive materials, where a mid-cut orifice failure could ruin the workpiece. The costs associated with damaging a part due to a faulty orifice greatly outweigh the initial investment in diamond tools.

Furthermore, waterjet diamond orifice tend to be more cost-effective over time because they demand less maintenance and have a longer operational life, reducing replacement frequency.

Operators managing multiple cutting heads may find additional value in using waterjet diamond orifice, as their longer, more predictable lifespan minimizes downtime, especially on complex multi-head systems.

Although waterjet diamond orifice are generally preferred, some operators opt for cheaper ruby or sapphire alternatives. Those who work with diverse materials, change orifice setups frequently, or prefer lower initial costs might choose these options to mitigate financial risks, as they are easier to replace and less costly.

Protecting your orifice is always advisable. Installing a short-stop filter in the high-pressure line before the on/off valve can prevent debris from entering and damaging the orifice. Regular cleaning with ultrasonic equipment can help remove mineral deposits like calcium, further extending the device's lifespan.
